ABSTRACT

The present study is concerned with the development of a Communicative Listening Comprehension Test (CLCT) for the CET. The test is communicative in that it measures Chinese college students’ ability to obtain information from aural discourses presented in communicative tasks that they might encounter during or after college. Improving the directness and, hence, validity of this subtest, the CLCT to be used in the near future will more effectively measure college students’ communicative listening ability, and thus provide better service for both English instruction in college and personnel selection in society. More importantly, due to the huge impact of the CET on college English instruction, the operation of the CLCT will also have a positive backwash effect on listening instruction, promoting the application of communicative language teaching in China.
