ABSTRACT

Technological advances such as the development of smartphones present the opportunity to influence behavior at different times and within different environments. In this chapter, we consider how theories such as the Transtheoretical Model and Self-Determination Theory have been used in the development and evaluation of technology-based approaches, and the role of gamification which uses ‘game-like’ features such as points and competition to drive changes in health behaviors. After providing a brief history of technological aids to health behavior, we highlight studies that have used technology to reduce health risk behaviors (alcohol, smoking) and increase health promotion behaviors such as physical activity.
