drawnbetweenfigureandgroundscenes.BUYINGwillbeafigur·e

scenerelatedtoaparticularverb;COMi\1ERCIAL_EVENTwillbea

groundscenerelatedtoaclassofverbs.Agroundscenerepresents

backgroundmaterial,acompendiumofinformationaboutsomesituation

typewhichisnotfoundinthelexical(orfigure)scenesrelatedtothat

situation-type;eitheritisnotfoundinthelexicalscenesbecausethere

rsnolinguisticmotivationforputtingitthere,orelseitisitis

informationwhichcannotbefitintoasinglelexicalscene,becauseof

linguisticconstraints.Amongtheconstraintswewillimposeonlexical

scenesinthischapterareuniqueness-therequirementthatnorole

beassignedtotomorethanoneparticipant-andcompleteness-the

requirementthatallparticipantsbegrammaticallyrealized.Although

lexicalfiguresceneswillineffectbeaspecialkindoffigurescene,

thereisnoreasonwhytherelationbetweenfigureandgroundshould

belimitedinscopetolexicalscenes.Theremaystillbenon-linguistic

figurescenes.
