ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews developmental research on posttraumatic growth (PTG). First, we discuss the differences between normative development and PTG. Second, we discuss how PTG is related to cognitive and emotional maturation, as well as verbal skills, in children by reviewing quantitative and qualitative studies on the age differences in PTG. Third, we explore the role of PTG in identity formation in adolescence. Although this chapter focuses on how PTG is manifested in children and adolescents, we also discuss how PTG may apply to other developmental periods by comparing the processes of gerotranscendence and PTG. This chapter ends with the review of studies revealing some similarities and differences in PTG processes, PTG themes, and PTG predictors between children and adults.
