ABSTRACT

This chapter describes various elements of interventions that are aimed at fostering posttraumatic growth (PTG), including psycho-education, initial management of emotional distress, constructive self-disclosure, development of a coherent narrative, and the translation of PTG experiences into everyday lives. Specifically, we review several clinical programs that implement various aspects of the PTG model. We review studies that integrate PTG with various approaches to trauma treatment. Future research is needed to examine the conditions under which elements in these therapies are likely to foster PTG. We also explain how PTG can be used as a self-help and peer-support group in this chapter. Finally, we discuss how PTG approaches have been integrated into cancer care and crisis intervention.
