ABSTRACT

Commenting on political issues via social media platforms has become a commonplace social practice. This kind of communication often involves referencing material that has been produced by politicians or public figures via various forms of media. One way in which this is achieved is via direct and indirect quotation, concepts implicated in broader research into stance, attribution, voice, and point of view. The aim of this chapter is to investigate the function of quotation in social media environments in relation to how expert knowledge is negotiated. A model for exploring the quoted voice that accounts for intersubjectivity and the multimodal affordances of social media is discussed.
