ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how corpus methods can be used to examine sexual identities using a case study involving two corpora of online personal advertisements written by women seeking women, and women seeking men. The corpora were then compared against each other to derive keywords, and a set of these words were subjected to concordance analyses in order to produce an understanding of the specific contexts they were used in. The chapter concludes with a discussion of what a corpus approach can and cannot reveal about the sexual identities of the groups under examination.
