ABSTRACT

Creative subjects are generally considered to be art, music and drama and many schools find innovative ways to embrace these within cross-curricular activities (Rowe and Humphries, 2001: 31159–62) but writing itself, although often enhanced by these innovations, is not always seen as a discipline that requires creative nurturing in its own right. Literacy, after all, is alive and well, balancing balls on its nose and honking as it flaps its flippers. It may have to leap through hoops but it is at least still respected in the context of assessable learning. Art, music and drama are more often set free to wander away into the woods and fend for themselves. Their anguished howls can be heard on many a moonlit night.
