ABSTRACT

Visual thinking is not the sole domain of the artist. Theoretical physicist Albert Einstein (1879–1955) created metaphors through visualisation and used these to ‘problem solve’ his ideas. He also invented imaginary worlds with different rules, which enabled him to see new perspectives that he could then re-envisage within the real world. This was how he came up with the theory of relativity (Michalko, 2001: 216–25).
