ABSTRACT

Leadership is the process of influencing individual and group activities towards achieving the objective. The leader involves the subordinates in discussing the objectives of the task, developing strategies to accomplish it and determining who carries out what. Leaders require power to be able to lead, but power comes from a variety of sources. These include: legitimate power that results from the position one holds within the hierarchy of the organisation and the authority that goes with that position, and reward power that goes with the ability to be able to reward people for their work. There are various ways leadership style is defined, some more complex than others. Those are: autocratic, democratic or participative, and sez-faire. The great leader man approach is based upon the assumption that men and women of great vision, personality and ability rise to positions of prominence and affect and change the course of history.
