Whentakeninitsentirety,Prieto'sapproachtosemioticshasaunique character.InawaythatissuperficiallysimilartoMorris''semiotic',a majorpartofPrieto'ssemiotictheoryisconcernedwithpresentingan analyticmodelofwhathappenswhenaparticularmessageisconveyedby theoccurrenceofan'index'.However,twomajorconsiderationsmake Prieto'sapproachfundamentallydifferentfromthetypeofapproach exemplifiedbythatofMorris:(a)anequalconcernforageneraltypology of'indices'andof'codes',alongsidethedevelopmentofamodelfor individualcommunicationacts;(b)independentdevelopmentofatheory of'indices'andof'codes',asopposedtosuchtheoriesbeinginducedfrom amodelofcommunicationacts(thesetheoriesaremerelyexpectedtobe congruentwithfactorsintheanalysisof'I'actesemique',andviceversa).
