ABSTRACT

Inthecaseofthesemiotictheorydiscussedinthischapter,weshallbe dealingwithanapproach-notunrelatedtofunctionalsemiology,but,as itwillbeseen,quitesignificantlydifferentfromit-initiatedbytheideas ofJanW.F.MulderanddevelopedchieflybyMulderandthepresent author.Thisbeingthecase,thepresentationwill,inthemain,avoid referencestotheauthorshipofparticularideas,except,ofcourse,for textualreferences,wheretheyaredeemedtobeuseful.Furthermore,it shouldbeunderstoodthat,ingeneral,theviewsofMulderandofmyself coincidesufficientlynottopresentsignificantalternatives,evenwhere theseviewsareexpressedindifferentways.Ontheotherhand,Idonot feelbound,intheoutliningoftheseviews,toadherestrictlytoalready publishedmaterial-thatis,Ireservetherighttointroducecertain 'innovations'wheretheyseemtobeappropriate.Consequently,Itake fullresponsibilityformyversionofaxiomaticfunctionalistsemiotics (henceforthreferredtoas'axiomaticsemiotics')onallpointswhereit maynotdojusticetotheideasofMulder.
