ABSTRACT

Strategy Three, make reading and writing authentic, for learners, builds their ability to explore, uncover, and solve challenges while, at the same time, developing their reading and writing ability. The connection between projects and literacy runs deep and one cannot occur without the other. The text selections, classroom libraries, and book bins spark solutions, ignite ideas, and generate growth-producing dialogue even at the earliest ages. Using a project-based learning approach in our teaching gives US the space to make literacy a central focus in the classroom. All reading experiences are also pre-writing opportunities. Writing, the other component of literacy, is the long-term process that guides our kids to turn their ideas into viable solutions and well-developed stories. Writing is the foundation for every high quality project. Writing also provides the space for our learners to reflect on their learning and to document their troubleshooting and changes over time.
