ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a broad overview of forensic odontology. Beginning with defining the discipline of odontology, it then discusses the role that forensic dentists play in identifying deceased individuals. A brief overview of dental structures is provided, followed by a discussion of the types of dental records that may be used by the forensic dentist. The odontologist's contribution to dental ageing and superimposition are also discussed. Current research being undertaken to improve ageing adults is outlined. The chapter concludes with a discussion of forensic odontology's shared responsibilities in advocacy for human rights.
