ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on intercultural learning within the academy — approaches, perspectives, and practical strategies, based on research — in addressing intercultural learning for students, administrators, and academics. It provides an interdisciplinary lens through their discussion of cultural humility from a healthcare perspective since cultural humility is emerging as a key element when researching intercultural competence. The book discusses the bigger picture of intercultural competence and social change, presenting a transformational model of interdisciplinary intercultural competence. It examines the role of higher education institutions in developing intercultural competence in post-conflict societies, which is a currently under-studied yet critical topic that deserves further attention in its application to a real-world issue such as post-conflict reconstruction. The book also highlights common themes as well as future trends and directions in regard to intercultural competence within the internationalisation of higher education.
