ABSTRACT

The international mobility office developed a plan to promote participation in mobility programmes and to facilitate cultural adjustment of foreign students. This chapter develops a course to prepare students for mobility. The idea of launching this course was influenced by the results of a needs analysis survey conducted by the Intercultural Educational Resources for Erasmus Students and their Teachers (IEREST) project, which found that the majority of students study abroad without previous intercultural preparation. Most of the universities offer general courses on intercultural communication and/or short orientation trainings for international exchange students, but to my best knowledge, universities in Hungary do not offer specific preparation courses on Intercultural Communication for International Mobility. Students were exposed to the basic concepts of intercultural communication with special emphasis on cultural differences and similarities, stereotypes and prejudices, and culture shock.
