ABSTRACT

The community dialogue on inclusion event is part of an ongoing initiative by the NorQuest Center for Intercultural Education (CIE) to increase inclusion outcomes through the development of intercultural competence. Based on Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) scores collected to date, NorQuest resides within a late minimisation orientation, meaning that most participants recognise their common humanity and are ready to explore differences. The event was calibrated to foster relationship-building, reduce the threat of polarities, and create the safety to explore important differences. The dialogue form enables practice of intercultural behaviours towards competence. CIE's approach is guided through the development model of intercultural sensitivity (DMIS) by Bennett, using the IDI as an instrument to quantify intercultural competence. Intercultural competence assessment approaches vary according to the intervention. In addition to course-based assessments, CIE uses the IDI and the participant perception indicator (PPI) tool to show self-assessed gains in knowledge, experience, and confidence for intercultural competence behaviours.
