ABSTRACT
ThereisasignificantnumberofreferencestoBakhtininthe writingsoftheMoscow-Tartuschoolincludingsomeattestingto,though notelucidating,hisinfluenceonthem.Thisisnotunexpected,giventhat Bakhtinreappearedinprintandinpersonaroundthesametimeasthe Moscow-Tartuschoolwasformingandemergingintoprominence.Indeed, somemembersoftheSovietsemioticsmovement1figuredprominently intheinitiativestoseeBakhtin'sworkspublishedandrepublishedandto otherwisegainprofessionalandofficialrecognitionandrespectforhim. Nevertheless,almostnoneoftheirreferencesareofthekindwhichwould helpusunderstandhowBakhtin'sthoughtchangedorinfluencedthe directionoftheirthinkingeitheronspecificquestionsoringeneral.One possibleexceptionhereisBorisUspenskii'sworkonpointofview.2
