ABSTRACT

Parenting twins has become a subject of intense interest for parents and families of twins and mental health professionals and educators who work with twins. Twin attachment is as important as genetic endowment, environmental stimulation, and parenting to the development of the self or identity. Twin perfectionism and over-identification make identity development confusing in some situations for non-twins who are therapists. The time and quality of closeness that is shared through affectional bonds in infancy and early childhood will determine the development of individuality and the ability to create new relationships and new and expansive ideas about life and mental health throughout the lifespan. The idea has developed that twin closeness can help mental health professionals understand the serious issues that arise in intimate and deep-rooted conflicted relationships. Good enough parental attention is crucial for the overall health of all children.
