ABSTRACT
People live socially in communities with various customs, routines, institutions, and rituals; these give rise to a commonality of background, values, and outlook that confers a sense of identity on the members of that community. This social environment can be called a culture and is an essential medium of human expression and development, as Midgley (1980) points out.
