ABSTRACT

Change begins with a recognition that something is not working or with the contrast of seeing something else work better. Museum veterans shared stories with us of how they suddenly came to see change as necessary. They described “Aha!” moments of personal transformation when they realized their museums were falling short of connecting with visitors. But in truth, none of these “Aha!” moments really happened overnight. While a fl ash of recognition can appear in an instant, understanding that change is needed comes from years of experience.
