ABSTRACT

While only a few wtiversities have established formal design review processes to guide campus development and facilities, recent trends suggest that design review boards are increasing in number and in responsibility at public institutions of higher education in the United Stares. The ability of most universities to consistendy consttuct buildings of superior design -- while also enhancing the campus conaext - is clearly deficient This may be attributed to a lack of specific intentions or a lack of institutional leadership. The programmatic complexity of many campus buildings, coupled with difficult and often intricate financing limitations, do not typically foster a climate that places a priority on developing or sustaining quality campus environments.
