Eachsocietyisfacedwiththeproblemofitsown persistence.Inaslowlyevolvingsociety,thiswilltend topresentitselfastheproblemofthecoming generation-newcomersunfamiliarwithits'~ys,butvital toitscontinuation,culturallyaswellasbiologica11y.In arapidlychangingsociety,however,theproblemisposedno lessforitsaurrentadultmembership.Practices,ski11s, values,expectations,etc.acquiredinchildhood,become redundantorunsuitedtothechangingconditions,andneed toberevised,replaced,upgradedorrestructured.The rangeofactivities,bothformalandinformal,whereby peopleareinitiatedintoorrealignedwiththeevolving traditions,structuresandsocialrelationsistakento constitutetheireducation.
