The Early Modern Dutch and War, Part 2
This chapter discusses how the Dutch bellicose collective mindset was expressed in such institutions as the citizens’ militia and the populace’s general preparedness to go to war. The chapter ponders in how far militarism was gender specific. It also argues that militarism was not class specific. It questions in how far the Dutch were driven in their bellicosity by religious fanaticism. Ultimately, it ponders the question who was Dutch and the nature of Dutch early modern nationalism.
