ABSTRACT
This chapter depicts the genesis of the Dutch overseas empire. It investigates its peculiar nature, in which economics trumped territorial expansion, and outlines the extent of the Dutch arms trade and mercenary warfare in the seventeenth-century Mediterranean region, Holy Roman Empire, and the British monarchies.
