ABSTRACT
Another book on the uses of schooling calls for explanation if not justification. There is no lack of books, essays, reports, and editorials deploring the status of schooling, and no dearth of recommendations as to what must be done to save the nation put at risk by illiteracy, the destruction of family values, invasion from alien armies, drugs, pornography, foreign-made automobiles, steel, and textiles.
