ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes justice-linked intervention programs for domestic violence (DV) offenders across Canada. It considers various ways that individuals convicted of DV-related offenses access, DV intervention and explores differing levels of coordination and communication between the justice system and intervention services. The chapter describes the programs themselves, considering issues of program length, modality, therapeutic orientation, content, and associated services to victims of men’s abuse. It provides an overview of justice-linked domestic violence intervention across Canada, identifies core commonalities, and highlights the range of innovative responses being developed. The chapter also provides a foundation for national research and policy priorities in justice-linked DV perpetrator interventions. It considers a range of program characteristics along with evidence from DV intervention and related literatures on these program differences. Elders are often invited to the group counseling sessions to talk about family life, and non-violent dispute resolution, and to instill pride in traditional practices.
