ABSTRACT

Equality and justice are not synonymous but there are important connections between the two and it will be argued that justice comes down to a kind of equality in the end. At a superficial level, however, there are a number of distinctions to be made. Among these is that saying that two people are being treated equally is a statement of fact (if it is true) and it is a further question as to whether this state of affairs is desirable. But if we agree that a certain way of treating them is just, no further justification is required, though we may always argue as to whether it is just or not.
