ABSTRACT

The persistent path of industrial work in Russia was formed in the socialist period of the country’s history. This chapter shows that the development of the socialist path of industrial work in Russia represented a path dependent process. It traces the development of the core principles constituting the socialist path of industrial work and present quality control as one of its integral elements. The years immediately after the October Socialist revolution were a time of great uncertainty and chaos, but also a time of decisions that shaped the future of the socialist state. Adoption of A. K. Gastev’s version of NOT and the introduction of punitive labour laws became the first building blocks in the formation of the socialist path of industrial work. Workers were called to contribute to the industrialisation through worker mobilisation movements, such as shock work, Stakhanovism and socialist competition.
