ABSTRACT

Evonne's is an 11–18 state Secondary school. The student body reflects the social demographic of the school's location; there are few students from minority ethnic groups and few who speak English as an additional language. The music department at Evonne's school is near to the newly refurbished main visitor entrance. Evonne describes her musical background as a variety of high points and low points. When she is in the classroom though, she becomes both teacher and musician. One thing strikingly obvious in Evonne's teaching across the classes is her refusal to dumb down musical knowledge and theory; this seems one of the most fundamental of her beliefs. Evonne uses specific terminology to students and this is an integral part of her teaching but she is clear that technical terminology is not necessarily beneficial. Music is inseparably linked with society and culture in Evonne's lessons, and she often draws upon feelings to hook her students into these musical worlds.
