ABSTRACT
It is difficult to see how a theory of meaning can hope to succeed that does not elucidate, and give a central role to, the concept of reference. On the other hand, there are weighty reasons for supposing that reference cannot be explained or analyzed in terms more primitive or behavioral. Let me describe the dilemma more fully , and then say how I think a theory of truth in Tarski's style can help resolve it.
