ABSTRACT

The Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 resulted in massive casualties and economic loss. To reconstruct after such a big catastrophe, the Chinese Government used a specific approach—a one-on-one assistance programme—to recover within three years. As construction of the infrastructure, economy and education were addressed, this approach has been welcomed in the affected communities. Community residents felt that cultural heritage and economics had been looked after. Somehow, after the help ended, affected communities found it difficult to maintain their livelihoods. This chapter explores the post-earthquake reconstruction strategies, examines the recovery challenges and provides recommendations to policies and theories in post-disaster reconstruction.
