INTRODUCTION

This chapter reviews procedures for identifying and evaluating substance use among individuals with severe mental illness (SMI). The approach to assessment described here stems from the biopsychosocial model of addiction and is consistent with current knowledge regarding the comprehensive treatment of persons with dual disorders. Assessment is both an ongoing process and a therapeutic intervention in itself. Depending on the client's level of engagement, awareness, motivation, capacity, and resources, the assessment process serves to educate and involve the client and significant others in treatment.
