ABSTRACT

The high prevalence of comorbid psychiatric and substance use disorders is well-documented among younger age groups. However, little is known about elderly individuals with dual disorders. Demographic data show that those over age 65 are the fastest growing segment of the population, with estimates that this group will increase from 12% of the population currently, to over 21% by the year 2030 (Spencer, 1989). These future trends suggest the need for increased attention to the problem of alcohol and other drug abuse in the elderly.
