ABSTRACT

Until now, our discussion has focused on fundamentals of pastoral counseling in the context of one-on-one interactions between clergy and congregants. In this chapter, the same principles of active, compassionate, non-judgmental listening; awareness of transference/ countertransference dynamics; attention to structuring pastoral interventions; and confidentiality are applied to group settings. Clergy often counsel families, lead groups, and organize activities. While these activities are quite different, there are similarities in the dynamics evoked. Group work involves authority, delegation, and mediation, and conflict management is a core element in successful group work.
