ABSTRACT

This chapter describes program options for educating children in more than one language. It presents two such programs: Canadian French immersion and the European Schools. Maintenance models are most often associated with minority language speakers who have varying degrees of proficiency in their native language and wish to maintain it while learning a second language. The chapter discusses two such programs: Indigenous language immersion and Developmental bilingual education. Developmental bilingual education in the US is an example of a strong form of bilingual education. The chapter focuses on the European Schools, another strong form of bilingual education. It discusses developmental bilingual education for immigrant children, a linguistic minority group. As a strong form of bilingual education, developmental bilingual education enables language minority students to continue developing their home languages while learning a second language and academic content. The chapter highlights some program options for educating children for additive bilingualism.
