ABSTRACT

Considered isolated and economically deprived, the border zones between Algeria and Tunisia have become the site of intense smuggling activity since the Tunisian revolution. The source of this traffic, mainly specialised in fuel, is located in oil-rich Algeria. Every night armadas of all-terrain vehicles cross the Tunisian border filled with jerry cans. Smugglers are the most active in El Ogla and Cheria, in the provinces of Tébessa and Bir El-Ater.
