ABSTRACT

There can scarcely be an English teacher who has not made use of the fabulous resources on the ever more sophisticated Teachit and TES Connect websites. Visual references can be important: if the poem is set in Manchester, show pictures of Manchester, preferably of the time and the place referred to in the poem. Speaking and listening are areas of the English curriculum which can be the most difficult for children with SEND, and yet successful involvement here can provide the necessary background to successful reading and writing. Despite all the good work of primary schools, a significant number of students struggle to read at a functional level when they enter secondary school. There is much excellent material on the market which has appropriate reading ages and has the additional benefit of being short. Writing is a complex task and often proves to be even more of a challenge than speaking and reading for students with special educational needs.
