ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the connection between persuasion and ethics. The definition of ethics includes the word values. Values are beliefs and attitudes people have that can actually conflict with their ethical decisions. The list of ethical considerations can help walk one through a process of what to ask themselves when they are trying to persuade someone, or when they feel as though they are being persuaded. To get more familiar with ethics and its connection to one's study of persuasion, let's review a few different perspectives concerning ethics. The religious perspective examines the relationship between us as humans and a higher power. The human nature perspective states that people have an ability to judge, to reason, and to comprehend that far exceeds that of any other species. Dialogical perspectives emerge from current scholarship on the nature of communication as dialogue rather than as monologue. The situational perspective examines every situation that people encounter related to persuasion.
