ABSTRACT
Itmaybenoticedthatthesetranslationsbearacloseresemblance tothetranslationsofwh-clause-embeddingsentencesontheAqvist/Hintikkaanalysis(cf.thetranslationsin(16)ofchapterII).Infact,the translationsin(27)areastraightforwardgeneralizationofthisapproach.RecallfromchapterIthatoneoftheadvantagesofusingrestrictedquantificationisthatitcapturesthefullrangeofquantificational forcenaturallanguageiscapableof,butwhichcannotberepresentedby meansoftruthfunctionalconnectivesinstandardfirst-orderlogic.The analysisofAqvistandHintikkaonlytookintoconsiderationthepossibilityofuniversalandexistentialforceforwh-phrases,hencecouldbe presentedinstandardfirst-orderterms.Butoncewetakeintoaccount thefullquantificationalvariabilityofwh-phrases,assentencessuchas thosein(25)forceustodo,itisnecessarytoabandontruthfunctional connectivesandmovetoamorepermissivesystem,suchasrestrictive quantification.
