ABSTRACT

RecallfromchapterIIthattheanalysesofKarttunen(1977)and GroenendijkandStokhof(1982;1984;1989)ineffectassociatewhphraseswithuniversalforce,byrequiringthatthewh-clausedenoteall truepropositionsformedbyassigningavaluetothewh-phrase(for G&Stherestrictiontotruepropositionsholdsonlyforextensional predicates).Incontrast,theAqvist/Hintikkaanalysisassociateswhphraseswithexistentialaswellasuniversalforce.TheanalysisIhave presentedinchapterIIItakesthiswideningofthequantificationalpossibilitiestoitslogicalconclusionbyallowingwh-phrasestobeassociatedwiththewholerangeofquantificationalforces,inconsequenceof whichwh-phrasesaretreatedasinherentlynonquantificational.The basicevidenceforthisapproachistheinterpretationofsentencessuch asthosein(25)inchapterIII,inwhich,asIargue,thewh-phrasesare quantifiedbyadverbsofquantification,justasareindefinitesonthe LHKtheory.
