ABSTRACT

InmydiscussioninchapterIIIofpresuppositionaccommodationIalludedtothedistinctionmadebyHeim(1983b)betweenlocal andglobalaccommodation(cf.note17there);Ireturnedtothisin chapterV,section3.3,whereIsuggestedthattheeffectoflocal accommodationmaybeplausiblyrepresentedatLF,butthatthis seemslessplausibleforglobalaccommodation.InthisappendixIwant toconsiderinmoredetailtheeffectofglobalaccommodationonthe logicaltranslations(IwillmakenoreferenceheretoLF).Inparticular, Iwilltrytoexploitthisprocesstotakeintoaccountawidelyassumed propertyofwhich-phrasesthatIhave,forsimplicity,purposelyignored throughoutthisstudy;namely,thattheyaredefinite(thisisthe position,forexample,ofKatzandPostal(1964)).
