ABSTRACT

This chapter presents several case studies intended to provide an overview of recent and ongoing mobile learning and teaching initiatives to set the scene for the reader. Younger children attending primary or elementary schools are less likely to have access to their own mobile phones. However, understandably, given teachers' and parents' concerns over mobile phone use by young children, many primary schools considering this potential of mobile devices to enhance learning have chosen to invest in lightweight tablet computers as a classroom resource. Many primary level teachers have capitalised on the consistent finding that using handheld mobile devices is motivating for students in order to engage them in learning drills such as those needed to cement phoneme-grapheme bonds in learning to read and number bonds or multiplication tables for learning maths. Taking younger students outside school can be difficult with the cost of both transport and the extra staff needed to ensure safety.
