ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on the use of mobile devices in secondary schools for older children and teenagers. Parents are less reluctant to allow their older children to use mobile phones and, whether the school is supporting or attempting to prevent their use, numbers make their way into school every day. Indeed, reports on mobile device use in secondary schools in different countries can be found widely on the web, often in teacher blogs or on school or on the relevant hardware manufacturer's websites. Where possible, secondary schools will organise visits outside of school to curriculum-relevant locations such as a nearby river for science, a mountainside for geography and ancient buildings for history with the aim of enhancing student engagement through authentic learning. Students in developing countries too are turning to their mobile phones to help them out with their homework.
