ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to teach about the changes that happen to materials in a way that is matched to children's experiences, by returning to the essential ideas and concepts that underpin the understanding of the particulate nature of materials. Relevant contexts for learning and progression in key concepts through primary school. A formative assessment of children's current understanding of changes in materials can be made by noting what children say and the questions they ask. A particular material or object might be presented to the children, and their ideas elicited about how it might change. Children's health and safety are of particular concern when teaching about the way in which materials change since heat is often involved. A risk assessment will identify the need to ensure careful adult supervision of any activity involving the use of hot water or a naked flame. Dataloggers can be used to support a variety of investigations that promote awareness of global issues.
