ABSTRACT

Sincetheearlieststagesoftransformationalgrammar,ithasbeenobservedthatcertainsemanticpropertiesofsentencesofnaturallanguage aresensitivetothestructuralrelationsbetweennodesinthesyntactic tree.WithintheinterpretativeframeworkthatIamassuminginthis work,thismeansthattheoperationsinterpretingsurfacestructures,or translatingthemintosemanticrepresentations,aregovernedbysyntacticconditions.Thequestionsare,first,whatarethesyntacticrelations thatarerelevantfortheoperationofsuchrules,andnext,whetherwe canfindgeneralconditionsrestrictingtheoperationsofallinterpretative rules(whichmayapplyindependentlyofeachother).
