ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 considers how the nature of arts processes have an impact on the development and formation of the arts therapies. It considers the variety of arts experiences within practice and whether the particular arts modality, drama, for example, or dance, makes a difference to the experience of the client and therapist. In exploring material in art therapy or dance movement therapy, for example, the therapist and client may normally engage in a particular aspect of the individual art form. In art therapy a client might engage in painting, clay work or collage, for example. The chapter explores whether it makes any difference to a client if they use clay or collage in art therapy, objects to depict a story, perform a script in dramatherapy, play an instrument or listen to a recording in music therapy.
