ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 explores the relationship between the different arts therapies, as well as that between the arts therapies and the arts-in-health movement. It reviews debates such as whether the art forms and processes should be divided into separate services and professions with distinct identities and ways of working, or whether there should be one arts therapies discipline, which makes use of a variety of art forms and processes. The particular ways in which arts media and processes feature within the arts therapies are examined, including the effect the art form has upon the therapeutic relationship, and the particular ways in which arts languages and processes allow clients to explore and develop the material they bring to the therapeutic space. The differentiation between arts practised in health settings and the arts therapies is also considered: where the arts are practised in ways that complement health practice concerning the commissioning of art in hospitals, or the use of the arts in health promotion.
