ABSTRACT

BLC and the .{ fLC} .101 Various subtypes of TOPICALIZA TION will be distinguished on

the basis of this relationship and the specific type of focus involved. The least con-

strained type of TOPICALIZATION, which I am calling GENERAL TOPICALIZATION, will

be distinguished from two other subtypes ofTOPICALIZATION with highly specialized

discourse functions: PROPOSffiON AFFIRMATION (cf. Chapter 6) and iRONIC PREPOSING

(cf. Chapter 7). Thus, I shall resort to using the abbreviation 'TOP' to refer to what I am

calling 'generalized TOPICALIZATION', while reserving the unabbreviated term for the

IOOJbis pragmatic type is actually the one most often used in syntactic discussions of preposing.
