ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the many meanings and types of workplace violence. It discusses the extent of victimization in the workplace and which workers are most at risk of violent victimization. The chapter demonstrates people knowledge on workplace bullying and describes various sources of data on workplace violence. It outlines various responses to violence and victimization in the workplace, and defines sexual harassment and its various forms. The chapter also discusses the extent of sexual harassment, and talks about how victims and employers can respond to harassment situations. Systematic analyses of workplace violence are rare, relative to more general studies of violence and victimization in society. In many respects, the causes of workplace violence and bullying mirror those of non-workplace violence, spouse abuse, child abuse, and other forms of victimization. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provide a list of recommendations for protecting employees against workplace violence.
